Project

One of the largest housebuilders and property developers in the North East of Scotland recently completed a significant project involving the construction of a large office/warehouse unit and service yard at Midmill Industrial Estate. This forms part of the broader Technology Business Park in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. The initial specification for the service yard's external concrete slab included a layer of heavy-gauge steel mesh, which would have been both time-consuming and labor-intensive to handle, cut, and fix across such a large area.

Solution
• The Project Consulting Engineers originally specified a 200mm thick external concrete slab with a bottom layer of A393 welded steel mesh reinforcement.
• The client expressed a preference not to use steel mesh reinforcement, and favoured a DURUS Macro Synthetic Fibre solution for the Service Yard concrete.
• Design information & loadings were provided by the client, which allowed ADFILs Consulting Engineers to provide a Professionally Indemnified solution utilising DURUS macro synthetic fibre.

Benefits of the solution
In a project where a high volume of HGV traffic is a factor, there is a high probability that deicing salts transferred from the road network will penetrate the concrete over time and result in the corrosion of embedded steel mesh. This will reduce the service life of the pavement. DURUS Macro synthetic fibres are not liable to corrosion and therefore eliminate this problem.
Disruption to site operations during installation was minimised, as there was no need to store, handle, cut and fix steel mesh on site.
The DURUS Macro Fibre reinforcement was added to the concrete during batching which ensures the required performance without the risk of incorrect reinforcement placement.

Installation benefits
- Significant time saving, as there is no requirement to cut and fix welded steel mesh.
- The health & safety hazards associated with the installation of steel fabric reinforcement are eliminated.
- The DURUS Macro Fibre reinforced concrete can be poured in larger areas with saw cut joints made the following day.

Result
The external service yard was installed within the construction schedule, without the need for time consuming placement and fixing of welded steel mesh reinforcement.

The client was very satisfied with the completed service yard.
