Dawn Baxter, ACREO’s HSEQ Advisor, oversees Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality management on-site. Her diverse role includes creating risk assessments, conducting site visits, noise and HAVS assessments, maintaining ISO standards, managing audits, and accident investigations. Dawn also handles safety gear procurement, document control, and authors the HSE Bulletin, ensuring colleague safety and well-being.
Dawn’s journey to her current position is a story in itself. Her career began in the music industry, working for Radio Scotland, where her early experience with risk assessments and fire safety inspections sparked an interest in HSEQ. This passion grew during her time at Scotia Homes, where volunteering on the HSEQ Committee led her to a coordinator role in the field. Her expertise and dedication eventually brought her to ACREO, where she’s been a trusted HSEQ Advisor for nearly five years.
No day is predictable for Dawn, who often arrives with a set plan only to shift gears to meet the immediate needs of her colleagues. But she thrives in ACREO’s hard-working, supportive environment, finding satisfaction in knowing her efforts help everyone get home safely each day. “That’s my motivation—to ensure everyone has had a good day and returns home to their families,” she says.
Dawn’s approach to challenges is organised and proactive, keeping her to-do lists colour-coded by priority and her focus on staying adaptable. When she’s off the clock, Dawn is as adventurous as she is diligent. Her hobbies include CrossFit, paddleboarding, mountain biking, and cold water swimming along the scenic shores from Cruden Bay to Cullycaun Bay. She even competes in CrossFit’s open events, finding fun and challenge in each competition.
For anyone considering a career in HSEQ, Dawn’s advice is simple: “Have a sense of humor and a strong passion for safety,” she notes. “It’s not always glamorous, and people won’t always be thrilled to see you, but if you can be firm yet fair, you’ll make a real difference.”
